What this website and the Nook app collect about you (nothing), what they connect to, and what others can see.

This website

This site collects nothing about you. No cookies, no analytics, no forms, no accounts.

  • Where it lives: the site is stored on Swarm and reaches you through a gateway such as eth.limo or bzz.link. Like any web server, the gateway sees your IP address. We don’t run the gateways and don’t get their logs.
  • Release list: to show the current version and download links, the page asks GitHub for Nook’s release list, so GitHub sees your IP address. The list is saved in your browser so the page still works if GitHub can’t be reached. It contains nothing about you.
  • Fonts, images and video come from the site itself, not from other companies.
  • Links out: download buttons and some links take you to GitHub and other sites, which have their own privacy policies.

The Nook app

Nook runs on your computer. It has no accounts with us and sends us nothing: no usage statistics, no crash reports. To work, it connects to:

  • The Swarm network. Other nodes see your IP address, as in any peer-to-peer network.
  • Gnosis Chain, through public RPC endpoints (rpc.gnosischain.com, with publicnode.com as backup). They see your IP address and your node wallet address. You can set your own endpoint in Settings.
  • GitHub and the Electron update service, to download the Bee node and check for new versions of Nook.
  • Swarm ID, when you sign in.
  • Ethereum (publicnode.com and The Graph), only when you link an ENS name.
  • The top-up widget’s providers, only when you use it to pay in from another chain.

What others can see

Nook doesn’t hide everything, and it’s better you know where the lines are.

  • Files. On an encrypted drive, files are encrypted and only the people you share with can open them. Regular drives are not encrypted: anyone who has a file’s address can open it.
  • Messages. End-to-end encrypted: only you and the other person can read them. Someone who knows both Nook addresses can see that those two addresses are in contact and when, but not who is behind them, and never what you wrote.
  • Payments. Nook pays for storage from your node wallet on Gnosis Chain. As on any blockchain, those transactions are public and permanent. They show the wallet address and amounts, not what you store.
  • First contact. The first invitation to a new contact goes through Gnosis Chain, so it reaches them before they’ve added you. Its content is encrypted; that the address received an invitation is public.
